A series of customer portraits created for MHFC Ltd, of individuals that have been able to buy homes in Bhairav Township, a public-private housing project in Jaipur (Rajasthan), with the help of a mortgage from MHFC.

68% of Mumbai's workforce is employed in the informal sector. A majority of these workers are the urban poor, excluded not only from formal sector jobs, but also from formal sector housing - living in slums and informal settlements across the city. The following customer stories were developed for MHFC Ltd, to reflect this sector's exceptional diversity, creativity, resilience and optimism in the face of the various adversities that accompany informality in Mumbai.

With a population of over 4.5 mm, Surat is one of India's largest and most prosperous cities. Historically, the city's textile industry has played a major role in its development. The sector's informal sector workers, however, although integral to its remarkable growth story, continue to remain largely excluded from Surat's economic success. The following photo essay documents the experiences of two MHFC customers who live and work in Surat, and earn a living through the textile industry.
